The world of robotics is a rapidly growing and expanding. It’s becoming more and more important to the way that we do business and how we work as a species, too. For many of us, though, keeping up to date with the changes and innovations within the industry can be tough work. However, one of the most interesting innovations in recent times appears to have come from Caltech 3D and Harvard. Together, they appear to have printed a series of self-folding robots.

This interesting new origami-inspired robot design is going to become very important in the near future. Capable of dealing with very particular configurations and settings, they could be adjusted for a whole variety of purposes on-demand. Known as the “Rollbot”, these devices will be used to achieve a great many changes. They’ll be able to assemble into a pentagonal prism shape, and will be capable of a self-rolling mechanism in response to its own stimuli.

That’s very impressive, and shows a fine example of how this kind of technology could be used in the future. They could become very important in the development of untethered robots that could be useful in both medicine and engineering. How so?

The co-first author of the paper, Connor McMahan, said: “Many existing soft robots require a tether to external power and control systems or are limited by the amount of force they can exert. These active hinges are useful because they allow soft robots to operate in environments where tethers are impractical and to lift objects many times heavier than the hinges.”

The creation of something truly special

Robotics is always impressive when it comes to life, especially when they can achieve something not previously possible. this new form of robot will be able to move naturally, akin to a living creature, but can adjust to fit the environmental needs and challenges that it faces. However, they will need them to be rigged with hard components to ensure that it can be controlled externally.

This design used includes liquid crystal elastomers to make sure that they can easily be adjusted and moved, even in extreme conditions such as high levels of heat. When this goes above its stated temperature, it will change shape to correspond and match-up with the change that has happened. This allows for vast changes in shape that would simply not be possible with other forms of material.

It’s these unique changes that are going to have a massive impact on the way that robotics are used in the future. By varying their architecture to fit with the environment they are acting within, these will be used to help create a solution to problems previously unsolvable.

While it’s unlikely that we’ll see such a device moving around the world around us anytime soon, they are very much in development. It’s an exciting time for science and for robotics – who knows what the future will hold when such devices come to be on a regular basis?

HOW TECHNOLOGY WILL CHANGE OVER THE NEXT 20 YEARS AND THE ROLE OF BATTERY TESTING

Future Augmented Reality

Technology plays a crucial role in all of our lives and is continually changing and evolving. Science and technology frequently combine to provide new solutions designed to change our lives for the better. Existing technology paves the way for new ideas and concepts. Over the next 20 years, we will see some of the most significant changes that have taken place since the industrial revolution so; here are some of the things that we can expect to witness.

Robots in the Workplace

It seems inevitable that robots will play a notable role in the workplace. NASA are relying heavily on robots when it comes to space exploration so the natural move will be for the use of similar technology in factories. Robots can comfortably work in challenging environments and complete mundane tasks. Robots can often complete these tasks more efficiently and faster than humans which will, in the long-term, reduce both fixed and variable cost within the organisation.

Electric Vehicles

With fossil fuels such as oil being in finite supply, car manufacturers are exploring the options available for electric vehicles (EVs). Tesla is one of the leading manufacturers, even developing self-driving vehicles. The problem with many of these vehicles is the distances that can travel on a single charge. Battery cell manufacturers are using high-precision battery testing equipment to develop more efficient lithium-ion batteries which will increase the range of EVs.

Future Battery

Improved Solar Panels

Solar panels are undoubtedly going to play an essential role in the future. Although they have been around for decades, it is only in recent years that they have become efficient and cost-effective. With solar roof tiles becoming increasingly popular, not to mention being more aesthetically pleasing, they are now more common in domestic properties as opposed to just industrial and commercial buildings. Some companies are currently investigating the potential for integrating solar panels into EVs.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Most people are familiar with Virtual Reality (VR) but less aware of Augmented Reality. AR is the next step up from VR and allows information to overlay other data and, therefore, has a role in many apps. Intensive research is taking place into ways that AR and VR can be effective in a work environment. The most obvious ways appear to be in scale models or visual representations in plans or blueprints.

Wearable Screens

Certain groups feel that screens on devices may become a thing of the past and wearable screens are the future. Technology is already available which facilitate the use of touch-capable projectors that could be adapted for skin or clothing. In the future, your smartphone may be implanted in your body rather than needing to be carried around in your pocket.

3D Printed Foods

One of the most rapidly improving forms of current technology is in 3D printing. It is already possible to “print” a building, but now some companies are experimenting with the possibility of printing food. Printed food would be a superb option in countries where food shortages are a constant problem but could also be used in the home if your fridge is running a little low. Although the technology is some way off at the moment, the potential is undoubtedly there for food printing in the next 20 years.

Food-aware Fridges

Remaining with the food theme, fridges that can detect when you are running low on food such as water or milk are already available. With direct links to supermarkets, the refrigerators will soon be able to order your food, meaning that you will never run short of anything. An increasing number of white goods manufacturers are exploring the opportunities with this technology, and it is expected that it will be available in most homes within 20 years.

5G

Finally, 5G connectivity is possibly the closest form of technology to being commonly available. 5G will mean that mobile devices will offer incredible download and upload speeds anywhere in the world. The technology could be used in everything from mobile phones to cars, not to mention instruments that are yet to be invented. Qualcomm is the leader in this field with 5G phones expected to be widely available by the end of 2019.

BMW Electric Motorcycle Concept – What Up With This?

BMW Electric Motorcycle

For years, discussions about the use and development of electrical vehicles have been ongoing. With many people passionate believers in the use of electrical technology like this to create a more sustainable environment, it’s good news to see companies such as BMW being so proactive in finding solutions. Indeed, they have a new concept on the way: an electric motorcycle that could become a template for bikes in the many years to come.

The Motorrad Vision DC Roadster is the most exciting electric bike that we have seen from BMW so far. With a few years of hard work moving to this point, the Roadster looks like it could be the pathway that BMW need to head down if they wish to break into this lucrative market. The bike, free from specifications at the moment, is not presently coming with a release date or any kind of information about when it could move from concept to reality.

Still, it’s probably the most exciting and complete take on the electric bike that the BMW firm has managed to produce so far. Ever since 2014 and their release of the C Evolution electric motor scooter, BMW has been making gradual but important progress towards a more impressive electric vehicle.

The C Evolution was capable of doing as much as 100 miles per charge, with a top speed of 80mph. However, it’s massive expenses – around $14,000 – made it an unaffordable option for many. That being said, it proved to be a vital educational step for the Motorrad group in BMW.

Ever since then, though, moves have been afoot in the background to produce something even more impressive. This new bike looks like it could be the best step forward, after the likes of the Motorrad Next 100 in 2016 and the Motorrad Concept Link, which was shown off in 2017.

BMW Electric Motorcycle Concept

The 2019s offering, though, looks like it could be the most exciting one yet. Stylish and effective, it looks like the kind of bike that we see in sci-fi movies. Compare it to the 2016 and 2017 models, though, and it’s far less over the top in terms of the design. If you wish to see a vehicle come to life with plenty of charisma but nowhere near the ludicrous design features that old models looked to have, then the Roadster might be the bike you wish to keep an eye on.

Can we expect to see the Roadster soon?

It’s really unlikely that this will move from concept to reality anytime soon, though. However, unlike the other concept models we have soon, this does genuinely look to have a good chance of making it from concept to reality.

Excitement is high within BMW and the biking community to see what comes next for this important part of their electrical bike development calendar. While it might need plenty of work to get to the right stage in terms of cost and efficiency, the Roadster could just be the golden ticket that BMW were looking for to make their mark on the industry.
